When you download a song with Spot Downloader you get an MP3 file at 128 kbps with the album cover embedded. This guide explains what that means, how it compares with streaming on Spotify, and when the difference matters.

What “128 kbps” means

The bitrate is how much data is used for every second of sound: 128 kbps is 128 kilobits per second, which works out to roughly 1 MB per minute of music. A typical 3 to 4 minute song is 3 to 5 MB.

MP3 is a lossy format: it saves space by leaving out sounds people are least likely to hear. The higher the bitrate, the less it leaves out.

Bitrate File size (4-minute song) Typical use
96 kbps about 3 MB Spotify’s “Normal” quality on mobile data
128 kbps about 4 MB Spot Downloader MP3 files
160 kbps about 5 MB Spotify’s “High” quality (Ogg Vorbis)
320 kbps about 10 MB Spotify Premium “Very high”

How it compares with Spotify streaming

Spotify streams in its own formats (Ogg Vorbis and AAC) at 24 to 320 kbps depending on your settings and subscription, and Premium can stream lossless on supported devices. Those streams are encrypted and only play inside the Spotify app.

A 128 kbps MP3 sits between Spotify’s “Normal” and “High” settings. On phone speakers, earbuds, car stereos and laptop speakers, most people can’t tell it apart from higher bitrates. On good headphones in a quiet room, you may notice slightly less detail in cymbals and reverb.

Why not 320 kbps?

Some sites advertise “320 kbps” but simply re-encode a lower-quality file at a higher bitrate. That makes the file bigger without adding any detail that wasn’t there. We state the real quality of the files instead of a bigger number.

Album cover and file names

Every file carries:

  • the album artwork, so it shows up in music apps, car displays and file managers;
  • a clean name like “Coldplay - Yellow.mp3”, so files sort by artist.

When to choose something else

  • Best possible quality: keep Spotify Premium’s offline mode or buy the song from a store that sells high-quality or lossless files.
  • Editing and DJing: buy the track. Bought files are higher quality and come with the rights you need.
  • Everyday listening offline: an MP3 from Spot Downloader is small, plays everywhere and doesn’t need an app.

Whatever you choose, keep downloads for your own listening. Our article on copyright and downloading Spotify songs explains why.
